What is tantra

Tantra is called a lot of different things, there are several kinds of Tantra and many people have different perceptions on what it is. Tantra is a Sanskrit word meaning "Expansion through awareness." One of my favorite descriptions of Tantra was giving by Margot Anand “To choose with awareness what gives you joy and when you do that it will lead you to spirit.” To me it is a practice of becoming aware. It is about learning to become aware of our physical bodies, energy bodies and the Devine within us. Then we learn to become aware of our partner’s body, energy body and the Devine within them. Next we learn that the Devine in both of us are from the same source, we are always connected and we are all one. Finally we can celebrate in that awareness and the blissful feeling of that awareness and oneness.
It is often called Sacred Sex or Higher Sex, but Tantra is more than just about sex. Sacred Sex refers to bringing ceremony and the Devine into our physical through our sexual experiences and practice. Combining the physical with the Devine and yet still remaining playful and creative. It is about slowing down and enjoying the little things and the journey. Forget about the end result. You will get there. But that destination will be even more incredible if you fully savor the entire experience. Tantra is a way of practicing sex, love making and a way of life to heighten your all of your senses. It enhances the pleasure of sex and life itself by bridging the spiritual and physical. Tantra is not a religion and yet it works with all religions, races, gender and sexual preferences. There is no judgment of race, age, religion, gender, transgender, gay or lesbian. Everyone is accepted and can benefit from practicing Tantra. There are several techniques and tools for practicing Tantra including but not limited to: exercises, meditations, yoga, ceremonies, massage, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, chakra work, partner skills and much more. All of these assist in opening your senses, energy, awareness of your body, sensuality, sexuality and the Devine in yourself and your partner. One of the main purposes is to expand your awareness of everything and that everything is connected and from the same source. Tantra is also an incredible tool for creating and manifesting the things you desire in your life by using that raw and powerful sexual energy to create and put things into motion.
There are all kinds of Tantra: Red Tantra, Black Tantra, White Tantra, Sky Tantra and so on. You will also find hundreds of different kinds of practices from meditation, yoga, breathing, dance, movement, touch, massage techniques, sensory awaking, stretching and strengthening exercises. You don’t have to do everything and no one style of Tantra is better than the other. You need to find what works best for you and take it from there. You may add or change things as you go along or even change styles. The main thing is that you don’t take it too seriously and it should not become a chore. You need to have fun and most of all it should make you feel relaxed, open and bring you joy.
People practice Tantra for different reasons. Some practice it purely for sexual pleasure, some for spiritual awakening, building a deeper intimacy with themselves or partners and some for general health and vitality. It doesn’t matter what your reasons are and they may change over time. I practice Tantra for all of its benefits and I am honored to share my knowledge with you so that you may benefit however you desire.
